The Concordia was a school and training vessel designed specifically for West Island College and the Class Afloat program. A 188-foot, steel-hulled barquentine built by Polish shipbuilders in 1992, she was an impressive ship under full sail much loved by her many crew over the years. In her 18 years as a sail training vessel, Concordia docked at hundreds of ports around the world and weathered countless squalls and storms, only to be sent to the bottom of the ocean by a freak wind event—a microburst about five miles wide that only lasted for two to three minutes.
She now rests at 27º 27’ 9” S, 40º 53’6” W far below the surface of the
Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Brazil.
